Who wouldn't want that: a laying aid for tiles, natural stone, porcelain stoneware and slabs, which works in both thinbed and thickbed methods on the floor as well as on the wall. What sounds utopian, is already a reality thanks to a clever idea from Italy. The Raimondi Levelling System, or RLS for short, was specifically developed for large areas and thin tiles. This three-part levelling system ensures uniform flatness in the interior - fast, simple, and partly even reusable. Rarely has it been so easy to lay tiles and natural stone!
Components of the system
The installation aid RLS consists of three elements. Clips serve as anchors. These require a minimum temperature of +10 °C and are therefore only intended for use on warmer days and indoor use. It is a disposable product that is disposed of after installation is complete. The reusable wedges are used to tighten the clips. A special plier is then used for measured tightening and fine-tuning. While there are separate pliers for floor and wall installation, in case of doubt one device can be used for both purposes, although the grip position and thus the handling differs. In addition, other accessories are available, including seats, knee pads and suitable slab lifters.
The right clip makes a difference
Caution: With the Raimondi Levelling System for laying natural stone and tiles, not all clips are the same. They are available in two different versions - one for 3-12 mm thick panels and one for 12-20 mm thick panels. The clip consumption also varies depending on the panel size. Usually four to six per panel (two to three on each side edge) are needed, for small formats one clip is enough. The RLS clip creates an automatic joint width of 1 mm. For larger joints, additional joint spacer crosses can be used.
How the RLS leveling system works:
Firstly, tile adhesive is applied to the desired surface. Depending on the panel format, the required number of clips is then attached to the tile, followed by the installation. In the next step, the wedge is inserted into the clip. It must not exceed the breaking point. The wedge setting can be simplified using the pliers for wall or floor installation. Repeat this process for the entire surface, then wait until the adhesive is dry and bonded.
Clips and wedge can now simply be removed by boot or rubber hammer. To do this, kick or hit against the protruding clip parallel to the joint - never against the wedge! The RLS parts can now be comfortably swept together and collected. While the clips are to be disposed off, the wedges can be retained and used for further installation work.
